References Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR)

Sometimes projects just go wrong and not as planned. I have experienced this several times in my projects.

But a lot of problems on construction sites grow with time and become bigger and bigger (because nobody feels responsible). They grow to such an extent that the people involved completely lose their sense of humour, when they suddenly realize the dimensions of the problem. A conflict or dispute has arisen out of a small problem, which binds resources of the involved parties. At that point a solution to overcome this situation is urgently required.

Conflicts cannot be avoided in larger projects. They are part of such projects but can be handled using methods of alternative dispute resolution. Drawing on my practical experience in international projects, I believe that mediation and conciliation (as well as arbitration on a higher level of escalation) are the best and most suitable methods to minimize conflicts and to avoid disputes on construction sites. Litigation respectively court cases should be avoided.

This was my motivation for completing an 18-month course of training to become a "Business Mediator" and an 5-month course to become a "Conflict Solver".
